Can Microdermabrasion Make You Look Younger?

The condition of your skin is one of the main factors people use in determining your age. Although there are advantages to being older and wiser, there’s no reason why you need to look it.

No wonder so many baby boomers and even thirty-somethings are turning to procedures such as skin resurfacing microdermabrasion to help their skin look younger.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

As you age, your skin starts to loose the attractive, healthy, glow of youth. This occurs because the rate at which skin cells turn over starts to slow down. When cells don’t turnover as rapidly as they did in youth, the result can be an accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin surface which makes it look dull and enhances the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin resurfacing microdermabrasion acts as a super exfoliator to help remove the superficial layer of skin cells that causes skin to lack that youthful glow. This procedure is usually done in a doctor’s office or in spa by a trained aesthetician.

The technician uses a special microdermabrasion machine with a tip attached to a vacuum tube which is used to gently “sandblast” away the superficial skin layer. The procedure is completely painless and most patients find it to be quite relaxing.

Does it Really Work?

You may be aware that your skin has a faint red glow to it, almost like a mild sunburn. This usually fades within two days and your skin will return to its normal color, although it should appear brighter.

To see more dramatic results, you’ll need to undergo a series of six skin resurfacing microdermabrasion treatments scheduled fourteen days apart.

Although the results you see with microdermabrasion aren’t as dramatic as what you would experience with a laser resurfacing or even a chemical peel, it can improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and give your face a more youthful glow.

Once you’ve had a series of six treatments, you can decrease the frequency of skin resurfacing microdermabrasion treatments to two to three times a year as long as you do regular exfoliation at home to remove dead skin cells.

Is Skin Resurfacing Microdermabrasion Pricey?

A session will cost you anywhere from seventy dollars to one hundred seventy-five dollars depending upon the location. You may get a small discount if you schedule a series of six treatments. Although this isn’t inexpensive, once you have the initial series, you can reduce the frequency to two to three times a year which isn’t cost prohibitive for most people.

Although the results aren’t as dramatic as chemicals peels or anti-aging laser treatments, skin resurfacing microdermabrasion is a relatively cost effective way to maintain the look and feel of youthful skin.
